In glassmaking, a soluble salt consisting mainly of potassium carbonate or sodium carbonate. It is one of the essential ingredients of glass, generally accounting for about 15-20 percent of the batch. The alkali is a flux, which reduces the melting point of the major constituent of glass, silica.

  • Installation of Winnemucca Whirlwind by Chris Drury - a set on Flickr: Created for the Nevada Museum of Art exhibition Chris Drury: Mushrooms | Clouds, on exhibit August 9 through October 5, 2009, and commissioned in collaboration with the Pyramid Lake Museum/Visitor Center, Nixon, NV, Drury?s Winnemucca Whirlwind is a major outdoor desert drawing. With a diameter of 300 feet, Winnemucca Whirlwind was recently executed on the surface of Winnemucca Dry Lake, near the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. The lake dried up after the Newlands Project diverted its waters for other uses in the early 1900s. Drury's whirlwind drawing, completed on property now maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, symbolically reclaims this storied site for Native Americans.
